San Guillermo, Bacolor Church / The Half Buried Church (Bacolor, Pampanga)
Bacolor Church is named after the patron, San Guillermo Ermitaño. Originally the church stands 12 meters high but due to the “lahar” from the Mt. Pinatubo’s Eruption in 1991 the church was buried (showing) leaving the façade into half of its original height. Although Pinatubo erupted in 1991, it took four years before its lahar reached the town and sunk its church.
It was mentioned that after the lahar
devastation, the town residents extended their hands to help preserve their
heritage by digging it up the original “retablo” and its centuries old images.
The retablo was reconstructed and was converted into the Museo de Bacolor.
